Hannibal, Mo. – The Hannibal-LaGrange University Lady Trojans took on the visiting Lincoln Christian Red Lions today, October 29. This was Senior Day for the Lady Trojans as they recognized Lindsay Fisher (SR/Temecula Valley, Calif.), Katerina Matsouka (SR/Athens, Greece), and Khristina Schellentrager (SR/Catheys Valley, Calif.).
The first set started slow for the Lady Trojans as they found themselves down 0-8 early on. A kill by Khristina Schellentrager would put the Trojans on the score board, making it 1-8. Strong serving from the Red Lions caused problems for the Trojans throughout the set, as the Trojans suffered a 3-25 loss in set one.
The Lady Trojans and the Red Lions battled closely in set two. With the score being tied 8-8, a kill by Joy Lamb (FR/League City, Texas) followed by two kills from Taylor Fry (JR/Boonville, Mo.) would give the Trojans their first solid lead of the game, 11-8. The Trojans and the Red Lions exchanged points for the remainder of the second set until it was tied at 22-22. Melissa Ryan (FR/Plainfield, Ill.) scored for the Trojans putting them up 23-22. However, it would not be enough to close out the set as the Red Lions would string together the next three points, handing the Trojans a 23-25 loss.
The third set followed the same order as the second set. The Lady Trojans found themselves up 10-8 early on. However, a Trojans service error followed by a ball handling error tied the score at 10-10. From here, the set was tied five different times. Late in the set the Trojans were down 18-21. Three blocks and a kill by Schellentrager made the score 22-21, in favor of the Trojans. The Red Lions scored three in a row to put the Trojans down 22-24. A kill by Ryan pulled the Trojans to within one point 23-24. The Red Lions scored the final point of the third set and the match, giving the Trojans the loss by a score of 23-25.
Melissa Ryan led the Lady Trojans with eight kills and three digs, followed by Khristina Schellentrager with five kills, two service aces, and 12 digs. Taylor Fry contributed five kills, while Joy Lamb finished with four kills and two blocks. Claire Maupin (FR/St. Peters, Mo.) distributed the ball well for the Trojans as she would finish with 18 assists and six digs. Lindsay Fisher picked up 11 digs in the libero position.
The Lady Trojans return to action this Tuesday, November 1, when they travel to St. Louis, Missouri to take on the Spartans of Missouri Baptist University. This AMC matchup is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
