Columiba, Mo. - The Trojans (21-19) traveled to Columbia, MO. to take on the Stars from Stephens College (11-31). Late runs in the game one helped the Trojans to earn the victory. HLGU claimed two wins over Stephens College 4-2 and 7-3.
Game one proved to be a good match as both team scored runs in the first inning but then went scoreless for the next five. In the seventh, the Trojans rallied together three runs. The Stars tried to counter but only scored one run. Madison Ingram (FR/Bowling Green, Mo.) had another strong performance on the mound and was credited with the win. Shelby Miller (JR/Union, Mo.), Jenna Duckworth (JR/Columbia, Mo.), Haley Zeier (SR/Edwardsville, Ill.), and Jordyn Alford (SO/St. Jacob, Ill.) each received an RBI during the game. Jennifer Harness (JR/Liberty, Mo.) went 3 for 4 at the plate.
The Trojan's momentum carried into the second game as they scored right out of the gate collecting the first two runs in the first. During the third inning, the Trojans knocked in two more runs but gave up three runs to the Stars in the bottom of the inning. In the fifth, HLGU came alive again and brought in another three runs to propel them to a 7-3 victory. Alford and Bobbie Henderson (SR/Liberty, Mo.) took turns on the mound and struck out four together. Duckworth and Zeier both added in two RBI's a piece. The Trojans outhit the Stars 11-6.
With these wins, the Trojans claimed a spot in the AMC Championship Tournament. The location and opponent is still to be determined after conference play finishes up later this week. The Trojans will host Williams Baptist on Saturday, April 22 with a double header at noon. Senior Day will be held on Tuesday, April 25 with a double header against Clarke University beginning at 3:00pm.
