Hannibal, MO. – The Hannibal-LaGrange University Athletic Department is pleased to announce the hiring of the new Head Women's Volleyball Coach, Kyle Smith, a native of Jefferson City, Missouri.  Smith brings a wealth of volleyball experience to the program.  He currently resides in Bakersfield, California and is looking forward to returning to the Midwest.

During his time in California, Smith's various roles have prepared him for this new opportunity.  He was the Assistant Head Coach at Centennial High School and Norris Middle School while working specifically with setters and right side hitters in both programs.  Coach Smith transitioned into club volleyball during the off season and was a Summer Camp Court Coach at Bakersfield Volleyball Club.

Most recently, he took on the role of Program Director/Head Varsity Coach at North High School in 2015.  During his time at North High School, he coached three First-Team All-League players, Rookie of the Year, and was tied second in the league.  Coach Smith found himself in a position to start up a club volleyball program of his own.  He became the Founder and Director of Valley Sand Volleyball Academy, and served in that capacity for the past four years.  The Academy held different adult leagues and tournaments and became the first junior sand academy in Bakersfield.  As a result of Coach Smith's efforts, his academy qualified several athletes for the AAU Junior Olympics.

Coach Smith graduated from Southwest Baptist University with a degree in Business Administration in 2004.  He went on to receive a Master's Degree from Belmont University in Sport Administration in 2013.

Coach Smith shared a little bit of his vision as he looks to lead the HLGU program, "Having grown up in Missouri, I am excited to return to the Show-Me-State!  I view my coaching career as a ministry, committed to mentor and walk with young people through the trials of life and to help them persevere.  I am blessed to being building a program centered around excellence in life, the classroom, and on the court."

Truman State University's Head Volleyball Coach and friend of Coach Smith shared, "Hannibal-LaGrange University made a great choice in Kyle Smith!  He is going to bring a great energy and work ethic to the program.  Kyle will work every day to make the program better.  I am confident that the best days are ahead for HLGU volleyball!"

HLGU's Athletic Director, Jason Nichols shared, "Coach Smith brings the passion and experience of coaching volleyball alongside a desire to invest in the lives of student-athletes according to the mission of HLGU.  I'm confident his vision and determination will take the women's volleyball program to new levels of excellence.  I'm looking forward to his immediate impact in the athletic department.  Furthermore, I believe the returning and incoming players will appreciate Coach Smith's commitment to developing a thriving volleyball program."
