Davenport, Iowa - The Hannibal-LaGrange Women's Volleyball team opened up the season on the road against the St. Ambrose Fighting Bees. The Trojans begin the season under new head coach, Kyle Smith. The team began training on August 9th and are excited to finally play an official game. HGLU fell in three sets 19-25, 17-25, and 12-25.
Throughout the first set, the Trojans fought point for point in the game before taking a 12-10 lead on an ace from McKenzie Latham (SO/Lake St. Louis, Mo.). A few points later, Shelby Maupin (SR/St. Peters, Mo.) had a kill to go up 14-11. But the Fighting Bees went on a scoring run and before HLGU was able to score again SAU gained a 21-14 lead. The ladies went on a solid run toward the end of the set but were unable to close the gap.
In set two, the team continued to show poise as the game was tied at six all early on. Then in a blink of an eye SAU managed to pull ahead 14-7. The Trojans faught back to within four points (13-17) after a kill from senior Taylor Fry (SR/Boonville, Mo.). The third set began with another back and forth effort from both teams until HLGU was down 8-10 and the Fighting Bees went on a scoring run of six unanswered points. From that point on the team struggled to get back into the game.
The Trojans ended the game with 15 kills and seven of those were from Maupin. Freshman Sarah Greer (FR/Hughesville, Mo.) was solid on defense in her first collegiate game and led the Trojans with nine digs. Both Greer and Maupin each had two service aces throughout the game.
Coach Kyle Smith shared, "The ladies came out strong and ready to play tonight. We had some freshman jump in and contribute in their first official collegiate game. I am looking forward to Saturday to see what we learn from this experience."
The women's volleyball team will host Benedictine at noon on Saturday, Augsust 26 followed by a match between Benedictine and Lincoln Chrsitian at 2 PM. HLGU will then play Lincoln Christian at 4 PM. Student Life is hosting a red out during the game. Please come out and support the Trojans in their home opening weekend.
