Hannibal, Mo. - The Hannibal-LaGrange Women's Volleyball Team hosted Benedictine University (2-0) and Lincoln Christian (1-1) on Saturday afternoon. Three games were played with HLGU losing the first game against Benedictine 17-25, 15-25, and 13-25 followed by BC beating LCU in three sets. In the final game of the day HLGU took on LCU and fell 17-25, 20-25, 22-25 but showed steady improvement.
HLGU celebrated their home opening weekend which started off against Benedictine who won in three sets. Seniors, Shelby Maupin (SR/St. Peters, Mo.) (8) and Taylor Fry (SR/Boonville, Mo.) (9) were the only two Trojans to get over five kills. Claire Maupin (SO/St. Peters, Mo.) had 15 assists in the game while Sarah Greer (FR/Hughesville, Mo.) had nine digs. Coach Kyle Smith stated after the game, "We came out strong and had some opportunities that we let slip through our hands in the first set. Benedictine's setter does a great job of getting the ball to her key hitters while some of our youth on defense is learning the pace of the game."
The Trojans moved into their second game after being able to watch the Red Lions play against Benedictine. LCU has a new coach as well with a very young team so HLGU knew they were pretty evently matched and the scores showed it. The team got better each set as they continue to get to know each other better. They had a more rounded attack with kills from S. Maupin (9), Sarah Greer (8), and Maggie Vert (FR/Lesterville, Mo.) (7). C. Maupin continued to distribute the ball well with 18 assists and S. Maupin added three blocks. Three Trojans reached double digits on the defensive side of the ball as well with 16 digs from Hannah Killian (SR/Bentonville, Ark.), 13 from Greer, and 12 from McKenzie Latham (SO/Lake St. Louis, Mo.). Shelby Maupin added, "this was the best game we have played this season. I continue to be encouraged by the progress we are making as a team. On Monday, we will get back in the gym as we continue to improve."
The ladies will be on the road for several games next weekend before returning to the Mabee Sports Complex on September 5 to play a game against William Penn University at 7 PM.
