Fulton, Mo. - The Hannibal-LaGrange Women's Volleyball Team opened up American Midwest Conference (AMC) play on the road against the William Woods University Owls.  WWU came into the contest receiving votes to be ranked within the NAIA top 25.  The Owls won the game in three sets (25-14, 25-18, and 25-11).

In set one, the Trojans were matching WWU point for point as they were down by one point (8-9) early on.  But HLGU became stuck in a rotation and before they could recover, the score was quickly 8-21.  Lexie Winfree (FR/Crane, Mo.) was able to earn a kill to end the skid, but by that point the set was too far gone.

The team came out with a lot of momentum in the second set where they took an early lead (7-3).  The score was 12 all when Taylor Fry (SR/Boonville, Mo.) served an ace to give HLGU the last lead of the set.  The Trojans were out scored 4-1 followed by a 5-1 run by the Owls which left another hole for the ladies to recover from (15-21).

HLGU began to lose steam in game three and fell behind early (6-18).  Fry was able to string together a couple of kills in point 9 and 11 for the Trojans but the Owls were too strong to overcome.  The ladies struggled on offense with 17 kills in three sets compared to 49 for WWU.  Shelby Maupin (SR/St. Peters, Mo.) led the team with seven kills followed by Fry with five.  Hannah Killian (SR/Bentonville, Ark.) collected 11 of the teams 32 digs.

Coach Kyle Smith said, "I am proud of the way we competed tonight against a solid opponent.  Our serving was good and I cannot wait to compete against Park on Friday.  We had some moments where we felt we improved but there were definitely some ball control issues we need to iron out."

The volleyball team continues their stretch of road games this week with a trip to Parkville, Missouri to take on fourth ranked Park University.  The game will be on Friday, September 15 at 5:30 PM.  The ladies will then play three straight days next week in Point Lookout, Missouri at the College of the Ozarks Tournament.  The schedule can be found on our new website at hlgtrojans.com.
