Hannibal Mo. - The Hannibal-LaGrange University Women's Volleyball team traveled to Arkansas to face the Central Baptist College Mustangs (8-7) in a conference showdown. The Trojans come into this matchup at (3-14) searching for a victory after going through a seven game losing streak. The team was also looking to win its first conference game of the season.
HLGU had all the momentum in the first two sets as they were able to win by scores of 25-21 and 25-19. It was a great start for the young Trojan squad who were clicking on all cylinders. The ladies let up after winning the first two sets and allowed the Mustangs to even up the sets at 2-2, forcing a fifth set. When the fifth set kicked off, the Trojans regained their composure and close out the game by a score of 15-9.
During this impressive performance a couple of career highs took place. Shelby Maupin (SR/St. Peters, Mo.) had a monster game leading the team with 24 kills. Taylor Fry (SR/Boonville, Mo.) would follow up with her new career high of 14 kills. Leading the team in digs and also posting a new personal best as a Trojans was Hannah Killian (SR/Bentonville, Ark.) (22). Jacy Allen (FR/Poynette, Wis.) proved to be menacing at the net where she was credited for five blocks but touched close to 15 to help the defense. The Trojans as a team had a season high in kills with 53. The victory now raises their overall record to 4-14 for the season.
Coach Kyle Smith was eager to share, "I am glad we were able to get our first conference win of the season. The seniors really stepped up with 'next ball' leadership tonight. CBC is a scrappy team and they kept finding ways to keep the rallies going. I am proud of the way we fought through our first five set match of the season, hoping in the future we keep the momentum when we have it and finish in three."
A great victory and good day to be a Trojan. The taste of success does not end there as the team has the chance to continue tomorrow with a doubleheader in Batesville, Arkansas. The team will face off against both Lyons College and College of the Ozarks. A victory against LC could put the team at .500 in the AMC. Live coverage will begin at 2 PM and 4 PM.
