Hannibal, Mo. – The Hannibal-LaGrange Men's Team hosted Freed-Hardeman Lions (1-7) for their homecoming and senior day. The Trojans came into this match-up looking for their first victory in 4 games after a draw last week against Park University. The men's record coming in was (4-5-1) for the season. HLGU celebrated eight seniors before the game as Coach Erskine will have some recruiting to do over the off-season.
The 90 minutes of regulation were great on the defensive end for the Trojans as they held the Lions scoreless throughout. Unfortunately, for the team their offense seemed to have issues putting a ball on frame. HLGU needed a few minutes of overtime to earn the win.
Overtime did not last long as the Trojans were able to close it out, thanks to a game winning goal by Sebastian Espino (FR/Santiago, Chile) (92nd minute) giving him three for the season. The shot was a rocket from the top of the 18 into the side netting of the goal. The goal was assisted by Fernan Centeno (SR/Porlamar, Venezuela) which was his first for the season.
Coach David Erskine shared, "Although we did not play well in the first half, we finished well. It was fun being a part of and recognizing our eight seniors. I am proud of them all and have enjoyed having the honor of coaching them."
The men's team will have a week to enjoy their victory as they prepare for their next match-up on the road against Central Baptist College. It will be followed by one of two remaining home games on October 17 against Lindenwood University-Belleville. Live coverage will begin at 3:30 PM.
